Sticky Honey Chicken: A Sweet and Savory Delight

Sticky Honey Chicken is a dish that captures the essence of comfort food with its irresistible blend of sweetness and savory flavors. This recipe has roots in various Asian cuisines, where the balance of sweet and salty is celebrated. The combination of honey and soy sauce creates a glaze that clings to the chicken, making each bite a delightful experience.

People love Sticky Honey Chicken not just for its taste, but also for its convenience. It’s a quick and easy meal that can be prepared in under 30 minutes, making it perfect for busy weeknights. The tender chicken, coated in a glossy, sticky sauce, offers a satisfying texture that pairs beautifully with rice or vegetables. Whether you’re cooking for family or entertaining guests, this dish is sure to impress and leave everyone asking for seconds. So, let’s dive into this delicious recipe and discover how to make your own Sticky Honey Chicken at home!

Sticky Honey Chicken this …

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound (450g) chicken thighs, boneless and skinless
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) honey
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)

Preparing the Marinade

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, grated ginger, sesame oil, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Whisk the ingredients together until well blended.
  2. Place the chicken thighs in a large resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the chicken, ensuring that each piece is well coated.
  3. Seal the bag or cover the dish with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours for more flavor. This step is crucial as it allows the chicken to absorb all the delicious flavors.

Cooking the Chicken

  1. After marinating, remove the chicken from the refrigerator. Take it out of the marinade, allowing any excess marinade to drip off. Reserve the marinade for later use.
  2. In a large skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the chicken thighs to the pan. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan; you may need to cook in batches.
  3. Cook the chicken for about 5-7 minutes on one side without moving it, allowing it to develop a nice golden-brown crust.
  4. Flip the chicken thighs and cook for an additional 5-7 minutes on the other side, or until the chicken is cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (75°C).
  5. Once cooked, remove the chicken from the skillet and set it aside on a plate. Cover it loosely with aluminum foil to keep it warm.

Thickening the Sauce

  1. In the same skillet, pour in the reserved marinade. Bring it to a gentle boil over medium heat, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. This adds extra flavor to the sauce.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water together until smooth. Gradually add this mixture to the boiling marinade, stirring constantly.
  3. Continue to cook the sauce for about 2-3 minutes, or until it thickens to your desired consistency. If the sauce becomes too thick, you can add a little water to thin it out.

Assembling the Dish

  1. Once the sauce has thickened, return the cooked chicken thighs to the skillet. Toss the chicken in the sauce until it is well coated.
  2. Remove the skillet from heat and let the chicken sit in the sauce for a minute to absorb more flavor.
  3. Transfer the sticky honey chicken to a serving platter. Drizzle any remaining sauce from the skillet over the top for extra flavor.
  4. Garnish with chopped green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds for a beautiful presentation.

This sticky honey chicken pairs wonderfully with a variety of sides. Here are some of my favorites:
